Academy Award-nominated actor Stanley Tucci has long been obsessed with the great modernist artist and sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Growing up in New York with an art teacher father, Stanley was imbued from a young age with the belief that Giacomettis work represented a unique search for the truth of the human condition. Having been an admirer of the art for forty years, Stanley has now taken his obsession one step further “ writing, producing and directing a forthcoming feature film, entitled Final Portrait, about the artist, starring Geoffrey Rush as Giacometti. Stanleys film recently premiered at the Berlin Film festival to critical acclaim.

In this documentary for Sky Arts Stanley explores the life and work of the artist he loves, and reveals the extraordinary journey of discovery that he had to go on to make his film. It's a journey which has given him a unique perspective on how the artist made his iconic works “ and what he was trying to express through them.

Stanley meets expert admirers of Giacomettis work, including sculptor Anthony Gormley and Tate director Frances Morris, who is curating a major new exhibition of his work at Tate Modern (opens May 10^th). He also talks to people who knew Giacometti personally, and sat for the artist. Stanley will reveal why Giacometti was one of the most relentlessly honest and enquiring artistic minds to have ever lived “ a man riven by doubt in his own abilities, and yet compelled to keep producing sculptures and paintings which are now hailed as some of the greatest of the twentieth century, and which command prices of tens of millions of pounds.
